Disp’eau

Precision monitoring of vine irrigation or vine training methods to optimize management of water resources and plot selection

Crop modellingGrapevineIrrigation

Description

To remain competitive, viticulture in Languedoc must adapt to the world market by producing wines that meet consumer expectations and a consistent quality from one year to the other.
This calls for a good grasp on water stress, which is increasingly difficult to achieve given the current climate trends. It requires to be able to manage the water resource at the landscape scale and the setting up of adapted water supply networks.
The DISP’EAU project aims to develop an innovative decision support tool to continuously monitor and quantify the water stress level at the plant scale and link it to the potential quality of the final product through a mechanistic modeling approach of the soil-vine-air continuum. This model approach will then be coupled to a diagnostic grid to link the water stress of the vine and the quality of the grapes.

Objectives

Develop an innovative software tool for decision support tools for optimizing water resource trajectories that allows:

Better management of the water resource

Substantial water savings in irrigated areas

An optimized dimensioning of hydraulic irrigation infrastructure

Plot selection

Expected benefits

  • A 10% increase of the producer’s price estimated as an average gain of 7.7 K€ per farm and 50 million € across the Languedoc-Roussillon region
  • Maintaining jobs in regional viticulture
  • Creating more than 20 permanent jobs in partner companies
  • An estimated annual turnover for ITK of 750 K€ in France and 3.4 M € abroad
  • 20 to 30% water savings in irrigated areas by using the tool. This represents a saving of 15 Mm3 of water, equivalent to the total annual consumption of a city like Montpellier
